Did you know that childhood trauma affects your gut microbiome?

Research has shown that people who have experienced early trauma have different microbiomes than people who haven't experienced trauma.

Researchers actually discovered that trauma sufferers experienced these differences in microbiome:

They had less gut microbiome diversity, which includes fewer types of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

They had higher levels of bad bacteria.

They had smaller populations of the important keystone bacteria that are a necessity for healthy microbiome balance.

According to PubMed data, "Adverse childhood experiences (ACE), such as abuse or chronic stress, program an exaggereated adult inflammatory response to stress."

In this study, 48 pregnant women who completed the ACES quiz and reported high scores (indicating childhood trauma) had greater abundance of gut bacteria that were significantly associated with cortisol.

This is important because these changes to the gut microbiome can affect everything from how well your immune system functions to brain health and to the way we react in stressful situations.

The gut microbiome can actually stay stuck in this "trauma state" even after you've grown up and your circumstances have changed. It does not just return to a normal state on its own!

But there are things that can be done to bring your body back into a healthy place.
