Do our beliefs control our biology?

This has never been more apparent than in the "placebo effect", which is something every medical student is taught. They learn that some people can get better when they simply believe that they are getting medicine, but are in fact receiving a sugar pill or placebo. And what is even more astonishing is that the statistics bear this out!

A Baylor School of Medicine study, which was published in 2002 in the New England Journal of Medicine, lead by Dr. Bruce Moseley, an orthopedic surgeon. This study evaluated surgery efficacy for patients with severe and debilitating knee pain. The patients were divided into 3 groups. One group had the damaged cartilage shaved. The second group had the knee joint flushed out. And the third group got "fake" surgery. The doctor made an incision and acted as if doing surgery but did not and sewed the patient back up.

The results were literally astounding! As anyone would expect, the first two groups improved. But the placebo group improved just as much as the first two groups did! According to the statistics, there are around 650,000 surgeries each year for arthritic knees. With a cost about $5,000 each, yet the results were clear to Dr. Moseley. He even stated, "My skill as a surgeon had no benefit on these patients. The entire benefit of surgery for osteoarthritis of the knee was the placebo effect." One member of the placebo group was even walking with a cane before the surgery but was able to play basketball with his grandchildren after the "surgery".

These placebo studies have even been found in treatment for many other diseases as well, including asthma, Parkinson's and depression! In fact, when treating depression, placebos are often times proposed as the first treatment for patients with mild or moderate depression, according to psychiatrist, Dr. Walter Brown, of the Brown University School of Medicine. What power do our mind and our beliefs hold? How does this line up with what the Bible has always held as truth? Do we truly have the power to alter our physical health with our belief system?

According to Dr. Bruce Lipton in

"Scientific data have been accumulating that show that a person's belief in religion or spirituality has a signiifcant impact on their health and vitality. There are 5,000 articles per year written on that topic and they reveal that medical and psychiatric patients commonly resort to religious and spiritual belief practices to cope with illness and other stressful life changes." "Dr. Harold G. Koenig, Professor of Medicine at Duke University, reviewed over 600 of these research studies that concluded that people who held more spiritual beliefs fare significantly better in mental health and adapt more quickly to health problems than those who are less spiritual. Spiritual beliefs have a direct, positive influence on the activity of the immune and endocrine systems that are critical for health maintenance and disease prevention."

So, it appears that the scientific and medical world are finally lining up with Biblical truths! "The tongue has the power of life and death." Proverbs 18:21

"A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." Proverbs 17:22

‘But then I will bring health and healing to the people there. I will heal them and let them enjoy great peace and safety." Jeremiah 33:6

I’m praying that all is well with you and that you enjoy good health in the same way that you prosper spiritually.” 3 John 1:2

Where do we go from here in creating new health habits and transforming our mindset? We must first start with removing and breaking through old negative thought and belief patterns and replacing those with biblical truths that we have begun to visualize as our future and as fulfilled promises! We may not see results overnight but we will gradually see an improvement when our emotions don't dictate our behaviors. This can begin with counseling, therapy or even biblical 1 on 1 mentoring and discipleship. Or even something as simple as searching the scriptures for the promises regarding our health and healing- you will find the scriptures are rampant with it!

Dr Bruce Lipton has admitted that he was not a believer of spiritual things when he began his research and work decades ago, but he has come to the place of realizing and recognizing that there is a higher power and that our innate beliefs and thought patterns can and do affect our health in a positive or negative manner. We must make the choices daily that will align with the type of future we want for ourselves!
